Very Nice Small Town - lousy drivers - 4/6/2018
Let me start by saying that I've lived all over the US and spent 3 years in Watertown. On the positive side, Watertown has a lot to offer for a town of 22,000 people. Shopping is somewhat limited but I can usually find what I need and the prices are reasonable. There is nice zoo, a larger public pool, the fabulous Redlin Art Center, a theatre company, nice community sports fields, two nice lakes for boating and fishing, several nicer restaurants. The schools a excellent, the roads are in good condition, the city is clean. The crime rate is very low and people watch over their neighbors homes and cars. The moral climate is much more wholesome than any other place I have lived. The summers are very pleasant with long days and moderate temperatures.
Now for the different, there is little diversity among the population, almost everyone is white, most have blonde hair and light skin. If you don't then you may feel out of place but generally everyone is treated with respect Read More

A Generally good place to live - 12/17/2009
Watertown in general has alot of old people, if your in Downtown and watch cars go by it seems as though every other car has a elderly person in it. But apart from all the elderly Watertown is a very fun place to be, with a exellent waterpark, and mini golf, it is a perfect place for to raise a family, i live in North branch MN now but i have alot of plans for Watertown and Wubay, a nearby town of about 600 people, i have alot of family out there as well.
Watertown has a very big retail section streching from the other side of I29 streching down to approxemetly 21st st. sw, it is almost like a minni las vegas, for being a desent sized city in the middle of nowhere, but if your looking for fun times and not alot of young troublemakers, or just looking to get away from the big city to a middle sized city with a small town atmosphere move to Watertown SD.Read More

A wonderful place to live! - 10/6/2008
Twenty years ago, I moved from north of Minneapolis, MN (one hour) to Watertown, SD to take a teaching job. My goal was to teach two years and move back to MN! Twenty years later, I have two children and a husband employed here in SD. We love it! Watertown's location to larger cities (Fargo-2 hours)(Sioux Falls- 1 1/2 hours) (Twin Cities- 4 hours) makes it a perfect place to live and raise a family. The public schools are very strong academically and yet we have three private schools to choose from as well (3 elementary/1 high school). It is a family-friendly community with plenty of recreational activities for kids and adults. Culturally, we have the Redlin Art Center and a Concert Association that brings in world renown artists of all varieties throughout the year for a VERY small ticket fee. Here's a big positive in the times we live in now--the cost of living is very low! You'll get a lot of 'bang' for your buck!

Small City opportunity with the Big City quirks - 12/16/2006
I was born and raised in Watertown, SD, lived here for 14 years and then moved out to Rapid City and lived there for 5 years. Just came back to live here again and I must say just in the past 5-6 years it has changed immensely.

On Business : There's plenty of growth as far as resturaunts and buildings being put up, but the mall is a joke. Half of the mall is abandoned, big signs where the stores used to be. And there's not much selection for what we have in the mall - 4 clothing stores, 3 shoe stores, 1 music store, 2 electronics stores. There's really nothing fancy about the music or electronics stores. If you're a family man or a soccer mom shopping for clothing, the mall might do you well, but half the time you won't find what you're looking for because the "watertown location doesn't carry it". I will say that you won't have a hard time finding a parking spot in front of any store, because most of the time people prefer to be sitting at home knitting or watching TV. Read More
